Every woman once she becomes sexually active should have a cervical smear done every three years. The smear itself is a painless procedure involving a gentle rub of the cervix to get cell tissue. It can't be done during a period so bear that in mind when making an appointment. Cervical cancer is a very slow growing cancer, taking anything from 5 to 20 years to become invasive. A regular smear can detect the development of abnormal cells (cells, which are not cancerous yet but could become cancerous if left untreated). Caught at its very early stages when there are abnormal cells present, the remedy is very simple - laser treatment. A painless X-ray like procedure is often all that is required. Sometimes a cone biopsy is needed and this involves surgically removing a cone of cervical tissue. Caught in its early stages it is therefore 100% curable. Contact your GP or health centre to arrange a smear test.
On average, 1 in 12 women in Northern Ireland will develop Breast Cancer. Breast self-examination is one way to screen yourself. It is best to examine your breasts at monthly intervals. Look out for persistent pain or unusual feeling, change in shape or size, any new differences between the two breasts, enlarged veins, a lump or thickening anywhere under the surface, discharge, bleeding a constant rash or any swelling in the armpit or above the breast. If you do find any of these symptoms see your Doctor without delay. It is probably something less serious but it's better to be sure.
Testicular Cancer occurs most often in males' aged 15 - 40. Improved methods of treatment mean the chances of being cured are very high. Testicular self-examination should be performed once a month in a warm bath or shower. Support the scrotum with the palm of the hand. Note the size and weight of the testicles. Look for any changes in size or weight. Check for any lumps or irregular swellings or changes in firmness by rolling the testicle between thumb and fingers. Other warning signs to look for include a general sensation of heaviness or a dull ache in the lower abdomen or groin. Few sufferers experience pain in the testicle. If you think you have any of these symptoms do not delay in going to your Doctor.
