If you become ill
If you are ill during your course always consult your Studies Advisor or Course Director. Go along to your Doctor and ask them to certify your ill health. This will keep you covered if you need to appeal later on in the year or need extra time to complete coursework. Education and Library Boards will pay grants and loans for up to 28 days of sickness, however, if you are ill for longer than this you may have to repay a portion of your grant/loan. You will not usually be entitled to any benefits while you are ill unless you have a letter from the college to say you have withdrawn.
Do not make a hasty decision to withdraw from a course., there are always other options so make sure you get advice before making any rash decisions make sure you explore all avenues of help, including your Studies Advisor, Welfare Service and the Counselling Service.
It may be possible, especially if your problems relate to health, family or money, to suspend your course (usually for a year) by taking leave of absence. Leave of absence needs to be approved by the Dean of your Faculty. You should see your Course Director if you wish to seek leave of absence.
If you do formally withdraw you should regain your entitlement to Social Security Benefits. Check at your local DHSS office to see what you are entitled to. See the Education and Welfare Officer if you want more details about consequences and considerations.
