Representation

All University of Ulster students are automatically members of their Students’ Union and among many things are entitled to seek representation from the Students’ Union on the grounds of Appeals or Disciplinary procedures throughout their academic years at the campus.

The Student Union Sabbatical Team consists of 7 elected student officers. 1 Vice President Student and Academic Affairs Officer per campus, an Overall President, an overall Vice President for Campaigns & Communications and a Sports President.

These officers have varied responsibility from day to day operation of the Union and are there to provide help should you need it. Officers will make themselves known to as many students across their campus as possible throughout inductions, visits to classes, Student Union events, Campaigns and as many opportunities as possible but should you need advice or representation  or any kind of support please feel free to contact your campus specific officer and they will be happy to help.

If a student were to seek representation on the grounds of an appeal process, by contacting their campus officer, the officer may be able to assist the student with procedures, guide them through completion of the appropriate Appeals Forms, check it through for them and if the student wishes to bring the officer along with them to an appeal interview then this can also be arranged.

If a Student Union officer were to accompany a student to an appeals hearing of any description, whether it be an appeal concerning extenuating circumstances and the student asking for a chance to resit/retake modules or part of their academic year again, to a procedural irregularity concerned appeal where the student may feel that they have received their academic marks under unfair conditions to perhaps a disciplinary appeal the officer is present for the following reasons;

- To provide a sense of moral support for the student
- To reiterate information to the appeals panel that the student may forget to mention under the pressure of interview conditions
- To be able to feedback to the student any information which they may have forgotten after the appeal in the ‘heat of the moment’
- To represent both the student involved and the Student’s Union and its’ services

The University of Ulster states with regard to students and representation, ‘…You have the right to be represented by or accompanied by a member of the University, for example, a student or member of staff at any stage in the procedure.’
