Bullying & Harassment

The University of Ulster is fully committed to promoting a good and harmonious working environment in which no member either staff or student should feel under threat or intimidated on grounds of religious beliefs, political opinion, sex, marital status, having or not having dependants, sexual orientation, disability, race, ethnic origin, or age and where every employee and student member are treated with respect and dignity.
University of Ulster Bullying and Harassment Policy (2004)

What is harassment?

Harassment in any form is unacceptable behaviour and will not be permitted or condoned.
Sexual, sectarian and racial harassment and harassment on the grounds of disability constitute discrimination and are unlawful under the sex discrimination, fair employment, race relations and disability legislation. Harassment is also a criminal offence under the Protection from Harassment (NI) Order 1997 and it may contravene the Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978.

*The University of Ulster has zero tolerance for bullying or harassment. It is viewed as inappropriate behaviour and it will be treated by the University as misconduct, which may include gross misconduct warranting suspension, dismissal or expulsion. All employees and students must comply with this policy.

What is the aim of this policy?

The aim of this policy and its accompanying procedures (see link to policy) is to try to ensure that harassment does not occur and, if it does occur, to ensure that appropriate procedures are readily available to solve the problem and prevent any reoccurrence.
