3.19PM, Thu Nov 10 2011

Hi everyone,
I hope you are all well and aren’t too stressed with the workload of Mid Term. If you are getting it tight and feel you are unable to cope with the strain of all of the work, please don’t be afraid to contact myself or your site officers within Your Students Union. My door is always open and I have access to my emails every day, so please get in touch.

It has been a busy semester so far... where have the last 7 weeks went? The next 5 weeks will fly by also so here is a brief update on what will be happening. Take adavantage of what is going on within You Students Union over the next few weeks as it is a great opportunity to get down and support your Union and Get Involved!!

We have Environment Rethink Waste workshops happening on the Magee and Coleraine Campuses  over the next few weeks. The ‘Let’s Get Wasted’ workshops allow you to get involved and create something useful and cool out of recyclable waste - such as old news papers and furniture. The workshops are FREE, all materials are provided and students get to take home whatever they revamp.

The workshops are taking place on the Magee campus in Duncreaggan Student Village Sport Studio on Tuesday 15th November and Tuesday 22nd November from 12.30 -2pm. On the Coleraine campus they are taking place on Wednesday 30th November and 7th December in the Coleraine Students Union back bar. To register for the ‘Let’s Get Wasted’ workshops please see www.rethinkrevamprestyle.com

The Students Union will be running an Environment Campaign alongside these workshops to help raise awareness of waste management and energy efficiency. This campaign will take place on the Magee campus next Tuesday 15th November and Coleraine on Tuesday 29th November.
Fairtrade Awareness Day will be happening on all four campuses in Week 9, Coleraine, Magee and Belfast on Tuesday 22nd November and Jordanstown on Friday 25th November. This will be a great chance for you to test our Fairtrade tea and coffee and enter a free draw to win a Fairtrade University of Ulster hoodies, to keep you toasty over the wintery months.

Call into our Students Union shop and catering and support Fair Trade. For more information check out our Facebook page.

Finally on Monday 21st November we will launch the all new Volunteering Centre which will help improve the volunteering services for students in each of the four campuses.

I will be in touch with you over the next few weeks to keep you up to date on how these Campaigns go and let you know what is next on the agenda for week 10,11 and 12!

Stay tuned to our  Facebook, Twitter and www.uusu.org or alternatively call in and see me on the Magee Campus, MG Buiding.

Keep an eye out in your Student emails for Global emails from Your Students Union!! :) x

» Sexual Health Awareness

Hi everyone,

Week 3 commences with another Campaign, Sexual Health Awareness.  We want you to call over to our Students Union stall this week and ask your Students Union team or campus nurse any questions you may have with regards your Sexual Health.

Our main messages this week are to encourage students who are sexually active to practice safer sex. We want to raise awareness about the risks of sexually transmitted infections and about the risk of unplanned pregnancies. We are here to provide you with information about the available help and advice relating to sexual health.

On the Magee campus we will also be raising awareness of the GUM Clinic (Sexual Health Clinic) that we have accessible on campus every Monday from 12pm – 2pm. There are also local GUM clinics in Belfast and Coleraine that the University of Ulster, Student Support team work with. Information will be available on your campus stall.

We will be in Coleraine on Monday, Jordanstown on Tuesday, Magee on Thursday and Belfast in Week 4. We will have plenty of literature for you as well as FREE CONDOMS!!  “21.6% of men said they are embarrassed to buy condoms, with 26.6% of women saying the same,” (Durex Sex Survey Sept)

So why not come over to our campaign stall and pick up some freebies!!!

» Welcome from the VP Campaigns & Communications officer

My position within the Students’ Union is VP Campaigns and Communications, which is an overall position representing all students. This will be my second year within the Students’ Union as a sabbatical, however I am the first and this will be my first year as VP Campaigns & Communications. We had a great year last year with a whole new Students’ Union structure change; we achieved the Students’ Union Evaluation Initiative Bronze Award as well as representing all students at University of Ulster. The VP Campaigns position was made available through the new structure change last year and thanks to a great, dedicated election team I was successfully elected for this academic year. So many thanks to all of you who voted!!

I will do my outmost best to utilize my experience and great passion to fulfil this role. I intend to publicise the work of the Students’ Union to the student body, University and the local Community through various media. I will act as the first point of contact for all campaign enquires at the Students’ Union, so if any of you have any ideas of campaigns they would like to see run on their campus do not be afraid to get in contact with me.

I can only encourage you all to get involved within your Students’ Union this year to enhance your University experience. There is always something going on in the Students’ Union, if it’s not campaigns, protests or referendums, we have numerous societies and a Sports Union to join. This is a great way to meet new friends with the same interests and gets you out and about.

To find out more about the Students’ Union and what we can do for you have a look at our website www.uusu.org and watch out for monthly newsletters, global emails and campaigns going on.

To stay in touch with your Students Union look us up on facebook and like our University of Ulster Students Union page.

All the best
Ciara
