What is NUS-USI and why are we having a referendum?
The National Union of Students-Union of Students in Ireland (NUS-USI) was established in 1972 under a unique arrangement where both the British and Irish national student unions, National Union of Students (NUS) and Union of Students in Ireland (USI) respectively, jointly organised in Northern Ireland to promote student unity.
NUS-USI now represent the interests of around 200,000 students in Northern Ireland and campaigns on their behalf in many different fields such as student hardship, health, prejudice and accommodation. More Information can be found on their website at: www.nus-usi.org
Why have this referendum now?
In line with our bye laws and articles of association, UUSU is mandated to hold a referendum every three years to determine if we stay affiliated to NUS-USI and through them the National Union of Students (UK) and Union of Students in Ireland (USI). Due to the trilateral agreement, we cannot be a member of any of these unions individually.
