Candidate for the position of School Rep - School of Computing, Engineering and Intelligent Systems

Mr HARLEY STINSON

Hello all!

My name is Harley Stinson, a final year Mechanical and Manufacturing engineering student here at Magee and current candidate for school rep of computing, engineering and intelligent systems. As a previous member of the student’s union course representatives I have gained a lot of first-hand experience dealing with students and their concerns, as a result I believe that it is of upmost importance students like you are having your voices heard. It is also of great importance to me that the level of communication between student, faculty and the university’s administration is both strong and consistent throughout the year with the hope being to create an atmosphere of transparency between staff and students.

My experience as a course rep has given me insight into initiating a discourse between staff and students regarding the strengths and weaknesses of the faculty. I believe that opening up communication results in problems being addressed efficiently and effectively so that we may implement potential improvements as quickly as possible.

The thoughts expressed by my peers and members of the faculty are of exceptionally high importance to me and are absolutely vital in implementing positive change within the school.

I have come to find throughout my time at Magee that rumours and chatter ultimately create a negative atmosphere and a sense of distrust and misinformation which is detrimental to the satisfaction and success of the staff and students alike. I believe that this school has great potential and I want to ensure that this is improved and built upon by listening to your opinions and concerns. I would never want anyone to come away from Magee to feel as though their experience at Ulster could have been bettered if they had someone to take on board their ideas.

Throughout my time on both placement and at Ulster I have been a leader and supporting member of multiple projects, this experience has been invaluable at cultivating both interpersonal and time management skills.

It is these skills and experiences which are core to the role of School rep and with this I hope to bring added level of coordination and support to the course reps within the school as their work is critical in providing a direct line of dialogue between the students and their university.
