Green Week Debate: Is the Paris Agreement still relevant?

Tuesday 08 November 2022

Belfast Campus BC-07-313 Moot Court or via Zoom

7pm - 9pm

For Green Week the Debate Society asks you, is the Paris Agreement Still relevant?

The Paris Agreement was a global promise (omitting Iran and for 2020 the United States), the key issues it looked to address were:

- Hold average increase in global temerature to 2 degrees celcius

- limit temperature increase to 1.5 degrees celcius

- Save and increase forest areas to caputure greenhouse gases from the atmosphere

- Make finance constitent and aligned with the agreements goals of reversing or slowing down climate change

- Increase ability to adapt to climate change

However, experts agree that these commitments are not enough! The current policies in place globally would result in a 2.7 degree change in global temperature, and many are calling for more drastic changes. Bringing in the question of the Paris Agreement relevance when it seems to not be able to catch up with the current rate of climate change.

Have your say and come along, everyone welcome!
