I am currently volunteering with two local community groups in Larne because I want to give back to my local community. I mainly help to deliver food parcels for the elderly and vulnerable who cannot risk getting out to the shops for themselves. Volunteering for the 'The Factory Community Forum' one day our team delivered over 150 meat parcels on foot! I delivered similar meat parcels with the "Antiville Residents Forum' and we are also starting to deliver dinners and soup.
My volunteering is making a difference as it helps to ensure that those who need this little extra help can get it and this would not be possible without volunteers. It helps to show the local community that the volunteer groups and the people within it are there to help them. On some occasions the volunteers delivering the parcels might be the only contact some of these people have for that day, so it's nice for them to show that people are thinking about them, helping them through this time.
I enjoy the interactions I get with the people we are delivering to, especially when I don't get to see any of my friends due to the lockdown. Like others I am anxious about coming into contact with the virus however the difference I am making in the lives of the vunerable spurs me on to keep volunteering.
