Statement from Ulster University Students’ Union on Isreal’s action in Palestine

As your Students' Union, we stand against all forms of war, occupation, genocide and terrorism.

As your Students' Union, we stand against all forms of war, occupation, genocide and terrorism. UUSU condemns Israel's actions in Palestine and together in solidarity with AMLÉ, NUS, and NUS-USI demand justice, peace and freedom for all. Israel's military action in Palestine is not just a political crisis; it is a humanitarian catastrophe. We cannot ignore the scale of the suffering, nor the international legal warnings of a “grave risk of genocide.”

We also condemn the Hamas attacks of 7 October 2023. Targeting civilians and taking hostages is unacceptable and unjustifiable. Peace cannot be achieved through violence - from any side.

We unequivocally oppose all forms of hatred, including antisemitism and Islamophobia. Our Union stands firmly against rhetoric that advocates for the harm or destruction of any people or nation. We believe that every individual deserves to live in safety, with dignity, and with the right to self-determination.

UUSU is joining the call for:

  • An immediate and permanent ceasefire
  • Full and safe access for humanitarian aid to flow into Palestine
  • Immediate release of all hostages
  • The UK government to withdraw support for Israel’s current military action
  • Immediate and formal recognition of Palestinian statehood by the UK
  • The Republic of Ireland to pass the Occupied Territories Bill

The Genocide must end Now.

During the 2023/24 academic year, UUSU chose The Red Cross as our Charity of the Year to support their life-saving work in Gaza. We are proud to stand with organisations delivering aid on the ground and helping those affected by this crisis.

We know that many students are feeling overwhelmed, heartbroken, and angry towards the ongoing genocide alongside the devastating media coming out of Palestine. These emotions are valid. If you are struggling, please know you are not alone. We encourage you to reach out to UU Student Wellbeing, or if you are in immediate distress Samaritans operate a 24hr phoneline on 116 123.

As a Union, we are committed to human rights, dignity, and justice - not just in words, but in action. If you want to help shape this work, reach out to your VP Equality and Belonging, Catherine Mailey, who will be leading on this year's Activism campaign.

We will keep raising our voices until peace and justice are more than just ideals.
