Referendum Question

"Should the Campus located in the North West be known as the recently renamed Derry-Londonderry Campus (DLD) or retain the traditional name of the Magee Campus?"

UUSU is inviting students to register as the designated campaign lead for both sides of the debate.

Student Campaign Leads will have the opportunity to share their arguments, talk to students and lead their teams in helping to inform discussion throughout the referendum and voting period.

They will also act as the main point of contact with UUSU, receiving key information and updates relating to the referendum process, while coordinating and managing a cross-campus campaign in support of their chosen position.

    CLOSING DATE FOR RECEIPT OF REGISTRATION OF INTEREST AS CAMPAIGN LEAD:
    Wednesday, 11th November – 12 noon
  • Each campaign will be allocated printed material of 50 x A3 posters (Colour)
    500 x A6 leaflets (Colour & double sided) so submit your artwork print ready.
    Deadline for submission on print ready campaign materials: Friday, 13th November – 12 noon
  • In registering your interest you will be invited to join an information session to find out more and to ask any questions.

Students asked for a vote on the North West campus name through a petition. It reached the required threshold, so the question now goes to eligible UUSU student members. It’s a direct way for students to shape the Union’s position.

Does UUSU have a position??

No. UUSU is neutral in this referendum. Both approved campaigns get the same support and space to make their case. Our job is to help you hear both views and decide for yourself.

Can I get involved in a campaign?

Yes. You can apply to lead either campaign by 11 November at 12 noon, or join a team: Campaign Form. Campaigning begins on 19 November. The rules and print support are in Referendum Rules.

What if students vote for Magee?

UUSU continues to use Magee in its governance documents, campaigns, website, communications and other student-facing material. We continue to advocate for retention of the historic name where we can influence, guided by UUSU policy.

What if students vote for Derry-Londonderry (DLD)?

UUSU uses Derry-Londonderry Campus (DLD) in its governance documents, campaigns, website, communications and other student-facing material.

Does the vote change the University’s campus name?

No. Students are deciding the name and position their Students’ Union takes and lobbies for. The University decides its own formal campus name and branding.

Can I vote if I don’t study at the North West campus?

Yes. All eligible UUSU student members, across campuses, can vote. Use your student login from 23 November at 9am to 25 November at 4pm:

How many students need to vote?

At least 3% of eligible UUSU membership students must take part. If turnout is below that, UUSU’s position stays unchanged. An abstain outcome also leaves it unchanged.

When will we know the result?

The official result will be published on the 26th November.
